“Sic Semper Tyrannis”, the motto of the Commonwealth of Virginia is translated “Thus always to Tyrants”. I grew up in Virginia and know the motto well, for in the third grade we were taught the meaning and purpose of the motto. For a Virginian, the take away from “Sic Sempter Tyrannis” is “Don’t be a Tyrant”!
A tyrant is a person who uses their power or authority in an unrighteous way. It is not always the most powerful that are tyrants. Tyrants can be average Joe! A police officer, a teacher, the UPS guy or even your neighbor who has a friend at codes enforcement can use their power or authority in an unrighteous manner.
As much as the motto is a warning to tyrants to beware, the motto is also a warning to every Virginian, don’t be a tyrant. “Don’t be a tyrant” was imprinted in my little pea brain in third grade and has not left. Whether I’m father, husband, business owner or range officer, I do not want to use my position of power or authority in an unrighteous manner.
Recently many have become tyrants – media, politicians, neighbors - using their power and authority to infringe on 2nd amendment rights. Using tragedy, sit ins, emotion and populist appeal is tyrannical. Tragedy is not to be used for political gain, it is for compassion. Sit ins use the power of disruption to gain power. Emotions are personal and populist appeal is not how a representative republic is governed.
Gunmatchadvisor.com has adopted the motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis” and “Don’t be a Tyrant” to symbolize our stand for the 2nd amendment rights. Providing access to a safe place to shoot will mean more gun owners and less tyrants.
